Rick & Ryan Perform on March 30 at the National Hotel in Frenchtown, New Jersey.
Journalist, world traveler, and historian Andrew Lawler captivated a full house of readers when he visited the Bookshop in 2021 to present his award-winning book “Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World’s Most Contested City.” He was invited to Frenchtown by his dear friend Kelly Pickering, our town librarian. Thanks, Kelly!
His new book of narrative history, “A Perfect Frenzy,” is just as fascinating as “Under Jerusalem.” It reveals a largely-untold cause of the Revolutionary War — Virginia’s rebellion against its Royal Governor and its decision to support the split from Britain.
As The Economist put it, Andrew Lawler’s gift is his “willingness to chase down every lead, no matter how outlandish, and his enthusiasm for a journey as much as the destination.” Historian Gerald Horne calls “A Perfect Frenzy” “pathbreaking…a gift this troubled nation needs as it approaches its 250th anniversary.”
This talk is free and all are welcome.
JOIN US SATURDAY, APRIL 5TH from 9:00-10:00am!

As a composer, singer, and visual artist, Cécile McLorin Salvant curates a journey of compelling narratives, unexpected twists, and humor. French and Haitian heritage influence her musical language and style, imbuing it with captivating rhythm and remarkable depth.
One of jazz’s most startlingly gifted vocalists and storytellers, among her most striking successes has been her musical partnership with the brilliant pianist Sullivan Fortner, a master improvisor and endlessly inventive artist in his own right. With every performance, they make a vast range of repertoire come alive in new ways — some breathtaking, others exceedingly subtle.

This class is for anyone interested in exploring the wonderful world of the imagination as it relates to embodiment and the T.R.E. process.
T.R.E. (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises) was designed by Dr. David Berceli to induce the natural tremor mechanism in the body to release daily stress and deeper layers of trauma and PTSD. As a creative person, it might help to think of T.R.E. as a portal; an opening or opportunity for a calmer, more centered and regulated nervous system. You do not have to be a visual artist to take this class. You can be a writer, actress, musician, chef, creative thinker, curious human etc... Prior T.R.E. experience is helpful but not required.
Creative visualization and meditation will be combined with journaling and "Free writing " techniques utilizing a provided writing prompt for a deep dive into connections between creativity and autonomic tremoring (natural tremor release). T.R.E. allows for direct access to the nervous system and can be thought of as a dynamic conversation between the body and the brain. Spontaneous movement/tremors reconnect mind and body.
T.R.E. allows the body to drop into a flow state in the same way that creativity does. The tremors emerge spontaneously and follow their own path when we let our mind and urge to control get out of the way. A flow state is not created consciously, rather one must produce the conditions for the flow state to arise. The conscious mind is experiencing but not directing. It is the body that leads the process. If we think of our creativity as a vessel in the way that a ceramicist shapes a pot or vessel, we can also think of the body as a human vessel. We go into the body to feel, release, strengthen and create anew.
Nicole Strafaci is a certified T.R.E. Provider and a working artist . She creates in a variety of mediums including collage, painting, fiber arts and performance. Nicole has exhibited her work internationally in many group and solo exhibitions for the past 30 years. She has sought a connection between her art and embodied states for as long as she can remember, studying at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, working as a professional artists model for 16 years and performing improvisational pieces for the stage. She has additional training in Reiki and Hypnosis. Most recently, Nicole has been combining embodied states into art classes and is very excited to be combining TRE and creativity; two things that have enriched her life in countless ways.
"Nicole has such a gentle and warm demeanor which translates well for leading TRE. She approaches with love and curiosity that makes you feel very safe, guided and at ease. I truly believe I have never felt this level of calm since my four sessions with Nicole. I found my creative practice immediately benefiting. It felt like dust being knocked off my soul and created a spaciousness for fresh creativity!" - Erica Greear visual artist/ performer Bring a journal and pen to class.

The wildly popular designer, educator, and podcaster Debbie Millman always longed for a garden. Her new book describes how her dream finally came true when she created the lush garden that she now shares with her wife, the essayist, author, and NY Times opinion writer Roxane Gay.
Debbie Millman is “one of the most influential designers working today” (Graphic Design USA). She spent twenty years as president of her renowned brand-design company Sterling Brands, has interviewed more than 500 of the world’s most creative people (including our Barbara de Wilde) on her podcast “Design Matters,” heads the Master of Arts in Branding program at the School of Visual Arts, and is the author of seven books.
You could, of course, buy a pricey New York City ticket to hear Debbie Millman speak. On April 17, Millman will launch “Love Letter to a Garden” at a gala celebration at Symphony Space, with two dozen special guests including Suleika Jaouad, NPR hosts Jad Abumrad (“RadioLab”) and Krista Tippett (“On Being”), and authors Sarah Polley and Maria Popova (“The Marginalian”). Tickets are $50, and she will not be signing.
Or, in the alternative, you can meet her in the intimate Frenchtown Bookshop and get a signed book, thanks to her decades-long friendship with Bookshop owner Barbara de Wilde.
This event is free and all are welcome. Readers who pre-purchase a copy of “Love Letter to a Garden” receive preferred seating and a signed original graphic print from the book.

Back in December, an email came to the Bookshop with what seemed like a familiar request. The email was captioned, “Carl Zimmer, local writer,” and read, “I was visiting your store not long ago and thought you’d be interested in my son’s book.”
But, this was not just another proud local mom recommending her child’s book. The son whom Marfy Goodstein modestly called “Carl Zimmer, local writer” turned out to be THE Carl Zimmer, author of fifteen bestselling science books, “Origins” columnist at the NY Times, Yale University professor, and known as “America’s Most Respected Science Journalist.” Wow. Thank you, Marfy!
Carl Zimmer will visit the Bookshop to talk about his new book, “Air-Borne,” which tells the amazing story of the air we breathe — an environment where oceans and forests release billions of cells, microbes eat clouds, and pathogens are carried thousands of miles, including as part of a secret Cold War plot to employ atmospheric biological weapons. The book takes us from mountainous glaciers to the aerial experiments of Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh to the laboratories that investigated the airborne spread of the COVID virus.
This event is free and all are welcome. Priority seating will be given to readers who pre-order the book.
Mayor Brad Myhre Townhall Meeting. Topics include: Ongoing infrastructure work and FY25 budget among other topics.

Join ArtYard on the afternoon of May 17, 2025 for our sixth biennial Hatch Festival, a celebration of creative incubation and community.
This year’s Hatch is a raucous, joyful conjuring of hope, transformation, and transcendence. Flocks of birds will emerge from a towering egg to dance and parade alongside community members in an act of creative rebirth.
In the lead-up to the festival, we’re transforming a section of the Laboratory Gallery into the Hatch Workshop, featuring a maker’s workspace dedicated to the creation of costumes and objects for the event. In addition, we’re hosting a series of Tiny Talks on the theme of Hope, with speakers sharing practices and insights to help us imagine the change we wish to hatch into the world.
We’ll be sharing workshop dates, more information on performers, and opening our registration soon.
