D. Nurkse has been described as "an essential American poet." The poems in his 11 books of poetry (including his newest, "A County of Strangers," released by Alfred A. Knopf in April) have won awards that include the Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Whiting Writers Award and prizes from the Poetry Foundation. He was the Booklyn Poet Laureate and teaches writing at Sarah Lawrence College.
